Eastern Madhya Pradesh sees heavy rain as dams release water amid monsoon's final surge

Three days of intense rain in eastern Madhya Pradesh have raised river levels, prompting the opening of Bargi, Johila and Bilgaon dam gates and releasing a cumulative 35.6 inches of water.
The eastern region of Madhya Pradesh continues to grapple with the last wave of the monsoon, four days before the season officially ends. Over the past three days, the area has experienced sustained heavy rainfall that has pushed river levels higher than usual.
In response to the rising water, authorities have opened the gates of three major reservoirs – Bargi, Johila and Bilgaon – to release excess water downstream. The combined discharge amounts to approximately 35.6 inches of water, according to local officials.
The controlled releases are intended to prevent overtopping of the dams and mitigate flood risks in nearby low‑lying districts. Residents in the affected districts have been advised to stay alert and avoid non‑essential travel near riverbanks.
Meteorological departments have issued alerts for continued heavy showers across seven districts in the state, urging communities to remain vigilant as the monsoon draws to a close.
