Students at Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar clashed with security on Saturday night after rumors of a rape and suicide, leading to vandalism, arson and a traffic jam on the Amritsar‑Delhi highway.
On Saturday night, a large group of students gathered inside the campus of Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Jalandhar after rumors spread that a female student had been assaulted and had taken her own life. The allegations, which were not yet verified, triggered an angry crowd that demanded immediate action from the university administration.
The protest quickly turned violent. Students broke windows, set fire to a few temporary structures and clashed with campus security personnel. Police were called in to restore order, and several arrests were made as the situation escalated.
The unrest spilled onto the adjoining Amritsar‑Delhi highway, where demonstrators blocked traffic for several hours. The blockage caused a significant backlog of vehicles, leading to long delays for commuters traveling between Punjab and the national capital.
University officials later issued a brief statement saying they were investigating the rumors and had deployed additional security to ensure safety. Local authorities have launched a formal inquiry to determine the source of the rumors and to assess any criminal liability for the damage caused during the protest.
