The West Bengal government ordered the closure of 252 madrasas after a review and sent show‑cause notices to 100 more, demanding valid authorisation.

West Bengal's state government has ordered the shutdown of 252 madrasas after a comprehensive review found them operating without proper authorisation, a senior education minister announced. The action targets institutions across the state that were identified as unregistered.

In a related move, the department issued show‑cause notices to another 100 madrasas, directing them to submit valid permission documents within a stipulated deadline, failing which they will also be closed.

The closures form part of a broader drive to regularise religious educational institutions under the West Bengal Madrasas (Regulation) Act, officials said, aiming to curb unlicensed schools.

The minister warned that the notices are final and non‑compliance will result in immediate closure, urging the madrasas to cooperate. No arrests or penalties have been reported so far.
