A fraudster who pretended to offer a 25% commission on a financial deal duped a resident of Rajasthan out of ₹17.81 lakh. The victim, approached through online channels, was convinced to transfer the sum before the promised return materialised, prompting a police complaint.
Following the complaint, the cybercrime cell in Rajkot, Gujarat, launched a coordinated investigation with Rajasthan police. Digital forensics traced the perpetrator’s IP address and mobile number to a location in Gujarat, leading to his apprehension at his residence in Rajkot.
The accused has been charged under the Information Technology Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code relating to cheating and fraud. A senior officer of the Rajkot cybercrime unit said the case underscores the need for vigilance against online investment scams and assured that swift legal action will be pursued.
Authorities have urged the public to verify the credentials of anyone offering unusually high returns and to report suspicious messages to the nearest cybercrime cell.
