As the five‑day Diwali celebrations begin, devotees in Indore will decorate the inner sanctum of the Annpurna Temple with currency notes.

Indore will witness a unique devotional display on Friday as the five‑day Diwali festival gets underway. The inner sanctum (garbhagriha) of the historic Annpurna Temple is set to be covered with Indian banknotes, a gesture meant to invoke prosperity and gratitude.

Organisers, comprising temple trustees and local community volunteers, have sourced a mixture of denominations to create a colourful tapestry on the deity’s pedestal. The practice, though uncommon, aligns with a broader tradition of offering wealth symbols to deities during major Hindu festivals.

Authorities anticipate a sizable gathering of worshippers and curious onlookers, with the temple expected to manage crowds through temporary barriers and security personnel. The event underscores the festive spirit that has engulfed Indore, where streets, markets and other temples are also gearing up for elaborate Diwali programmes.

The note‑decorated sanctum will remain in place for the duration of the five‑day celebration, after which the currency will be collected and donated to charitable causes, according to temple officials.
