India has inaugurated its first hydrogen‑powered train, which will operate on an 89‑km stretch between two stations in Haryana, marking a milestone in green rail transport.
On 28 September 2023, Indian Railways unveiled its first hydrogen‑powered train on an 89‑km route in Haryana, a landmark move toward cleaner rail transport.
The train, developed in partnership with the National Hydrogen Energy Mission, runs between two stations in Haryana using a fuel‑cell system that converts hydrogen into electricity, emitting only water vapor.
Officials highlighted that the project aims to cut carbon emissions, reduce noise pollution, and showcase the commercial viability of hydrogen technology on a public route.
The train will operate on a trial basis for the next 12 months, after which performance data will inform potential expansion to other corridors.
