Bihar Forms SIT to Probe Vehicle Insurance Fraud, Tightens Challan Norms

The Bihar government has constituted a Special Investigation Team to look into alleged vehicle insurance fraud and has announced stricter norms for issuing traffic challans.
The state government announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with probing suspected fraud in vehicle insurance claims across Bihar.
The SIT will coordinate with the transport department, insurance regulators and law enforcement agencies to examine irregularities, identify collusion between insurers, agents and vehicle owners, and recommend corrective action.
In parallel, the transport department issued a circular tightening the procedure for issuing traffic challans, mandating electronic verification of vehicle details and stricter penalties for non‑compliance.
Officials said the measures aim to curb financial losses to insurers and protect policy‑holders, while improving transparency in the state's motor vehicle ecosystem.
