A noticeable drop in temperatures across the country signals the start of the 2026 winter season, while a cyclonic storm is expected to deliver rain to twelve states over the next few days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a marked fall in daytime temperatures across the northern plains and the Himalayan foothills on Monday, indicating the official onset of winter 2026. Minimum temperatures in Delhi and Lucknow dipped to 8°C, while hill stations such as Shimla recorded lows near 2°C.

Simultaneously, IMD issued a cyclonic storm advisory for a low‑pressure system that has intensified over the Bay of Bengal. The system is projected to move northwestward, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall to twelve states, including Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, over the next 72 hours.

Authorities have urged residents in the affected regions to stay alert, avoid low‑lying areas, and secure property against potential waterlogging. The rain is expected to benefit agricultural zones awaiting pre‑monsoon moisture, but officials warned of possible disruptions to road and rail traffic, especially in flood‑prone districts.

The early winter chill combined with the cyclonic rain marks an unusual weather pattern for this time of year, prompting scientists to monitor the system closely for any signs of further intensification.
