During puja festivities in Jamui, Bihar, two brothers and three children drowned when a statue immersion and sand‑gathering activity turned fatal.

Jamui district in Bihar witnessed a tragic loss of life during recent puja celebrations when water‑related accidents claimed the lives of two adult brothers and three children. The first incident occurred at the Sona site, where a ritual immersion of a deity's idol led to the drowning of the two brothers who were assisting with the ceremony.

A separate mishap unfolded in the nearby village of Chakai, where a young girl had gone to collect sand for the upcoming Karma Puja. While near the water body, she slipped and was submerged, resulting in her death. Local reports indicate that two additional children also drowned in the same vicinity, bringing the total child fatalities to three.

Rescue teams and police were dispatched promptly, but the swift currents and lack of safety measures hampered recovery efforts. Authorities have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances and to recommend safety protocols for future religious events involving water bodies.

Community members expressed deep sorrow, calling for stricter oversight of ritual immersions and heightened awareness about water safety during festivals.
