At 4 a.m. on Saturday, priests performed a Panchamrit abhishek on Baba Mahakal, adorning the deity in a majestic form during the temple's Bhasma Aarti.

The Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain began its early‑morning Bhasma Aarti at 4 a.m. on Saturday with a special ritual. Priests poured Panchamrit – a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar – over the idol of Baba Mahakal, presenting the deity in a regal appearance. The ceremony, part of the temple’s daily worship schedule, is intended to purify and honor the Jyotirlinga, one of Hinduism’s most revered shrines.
Devotees gathered in the temple courtyard, witnessing the fragrant offerings and the resonant chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal”. The ritual’s timing aligns with traditional belief that the early hours are most auspicious for divine communion.
Mahakaleshwar, located on the banks of the Shipra River, attracts pilgrims from across India. The elaborate Panchamrit abhishek underscores the temple’s role in preserving age‑old customs while providing a visual spectacle for worshippers.
The event concluded with the customary distribution of sacred ash, reinforcing the spiritual significance of the morning rites for the attending faithful.
