The Telangana Forest Department has begun using drones to monitor forest areas, aiming to curb illegal logging and poaching.
The Telangana Forest Department has launched a new drone‑based surveillance program to monitor its forested regions more effectively. The unmanned aircraft are equipped with high‑resolution cameras and thermal sensors that can cover large tracts of land in a single flight, providing real‑time imagery to forest officials.
By deploying drones, the department hopes to detect illegal logging, encroachment and poaching activities that have been difficult to spot with ground patrols alone. The aerial footage allows rapid response teams to be dispatched to hotspots before crimes are completed.
Officials say the initiative will also improve data collection for forest management and help in planning conservation measures. The program is expected to reduce environmental crimes and enhance the protection of Telangana’s biodiversity.
The move comes as part of a broader effort to modernise forest monitoring across India, with technology playing a key role in safeguarding natural resources.
