Chief Minister Vijay will launch the widened Vetri Payanam scheme on Oct 2, offering free bus travel to women across 12,692 routes, benefitting roughly 8.4 million users.
Chief Minister Vijay is set to inaugurate the expanded Vetri Payanam free‑bus programme for women on October 2. The launch, announced by the state government, aims to enhance mobility for female commuters across Tamil Nadu.
The scheme will cover 12,692 bus services, providing complimentary rides to an estimated 8.43 million women. Eligible passengers can board any participating bus without paying a fare, with the cost borne by the state’s transport department.
Vetri Payanam, originally introduced in a limited pilot, is being scaled up to address safety and accessibility concerns for women travelers. Officials say the expansion will reduce travel expenses, encourage public transport use, and support gender‑inclusive mobility in both urban and rural areas.
