The Supreme Court has given the investigative panel a one‑month deadline to file its first report on alleged police misconduct during the recent Chief Justice of India protests.
The apex court has set a strict timetable for the panel probing alleged police excesses during the recent protests that centred on the Chief Justice of India. The panel, which was constituted earlier to examine complaints of unlawful force and intimidation by law‑enforcement agencies, must submit its initial findings within thirty days.
In its order, the Supreme Court emphasized the need for a swift and thorough investigation, directing the panel to focus on documented instances of excessive force, unlawful arrests and any violation of civil liberties. The court also instructed the panel to recommend corrective measures, if any, to prevent recurrence.
The deadline comes as civil society groups and legal experts have called for accountability after reports of clashes between protesters and police. The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the judiciary’s role in overseeing law‑enforcement conduct in politically sensitive situations.
