State Deploys GIS Mapping and CCTV to Intensify Wildlife Crime Crackdown

The state government announced the rollout of GIS-based mapping and CCTV surveillance across wildlife zones to strengthen its fight against poaching and other wildlife crimes.
State officials unveiled a new initiative that will integrate geographic information system (GIS) mapping with a network of closed‑circuit television cameras in protected wildlife areas. The move aims to create a real‑time monitoring framework that can pinpoint illegal activities such as poaching, trafficking and habitat encroachment.
GIS mapping will chart the terrain, animal movement corridors and known poaching hotspots, allowing enforcement teams to allocate resources more efficiently. By overlaying satellite and ground data, authorities hope to detect patterns and predict future violations before they occur.
CCTV units will be installed at strategic points including forest entry gates, water sources and ranger outposts. Footage will be streamed to a central command centre, enabling rapid response and evidence collection for prosecutions.
Officials said the combined technology is expected to act as a deterrent, improve conviction rates and ultimately safeguard India’s vulnerable wildlife populations.
