Devadurga, Jalahalli, October 17:
The district administration has responded to the long-standing demand to upgrade Jalahalli Gram Panchayat, a major commercial centre in Devadurga taluk of Raichur district, into a municipality. In this regard, the Deputy Commissioner’s Office has issued a letter directing the Executive Officer of Devadurga Taluk Panchayat to examine the petition and take appropriate action in accordance with the rules.
Buddappa Kavali, a former Gram Panchayat member and an activist campaigning for municipal status for Jalahalli, submitted a petition during the Praja Seva programme held in Hosuru Siddapur village. Following the submission, the Raichur Deputy Commissioner’s Office wrote to the Executive Officer of Devadurga Taluk Panchayat on October 3, 2026.
The letter instructs the concerned officials to examine the contents of the petition and the relevant facts and take appropriate action as per the rules. It also directs them to inform the petitioner directly about the action taken and submit details of the same to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. Buddappa Kavali brought this development to the attention of the media.
Public Hopes for Municipal Status
Jalahalli has an estimated population of 20,000 to 25,000 and its Gram Panchayat has 33 members. The demand to upgrade Jalahalli into a municipality has been raised for several years, considering its growing population, expanding commercial activities, two pre-university colleges and two degree colleges.
As Jalahalli continues to grow in population and commercial importance, local residents hope that municipal status will help improve basic civic amenities, including roads, drainage, drinking water supply and sanitation.
Earlier Efforts to Upgrade Jalahalli into a Town Panchayat
During the previous government's tenure, steps had been initiated to upgrade Jalahalli Gram Panchayat into a Town Panchayat. However, a related case is pending before the court, and clarity is still awaited regarding further developments.
In view of the earlier upgradation process, the status of the court case and the current demand for municipal status, there is growing interest in the next steps the administration will take. A clearer picture will emerge once official information regarding the current status of the court case and any relevant orders becomes available.
Final Approval Is Still Pending
The letter issued by the Deputy Commissioner’s Office does not constitute final approval to upgrade Jalahalli into a municipality. Instead, it directs the concerned officials to examine the petition and take appropriate action in accordance with the applicable rules.
The next stages of the demand will depend on the examination conducted by Taluk Panchayat officials, developments in the court case and the steps taken by the government in accordance with the relevant regulations.
The district administration’s response has raised fresh hopes among local residents and activists campaigning for municipal status for Jalahalli. With the demand for recognition and development remaining unresolved for years, residents are eagerly waiting to see whether Jalahalli will finally receive municipal status.
