The Punjab High Court has mandated the state to clear over ₹32,418 crore pending dearness allowance and relief for its employees and pensioners, adding a 6% interest component.

The Punjab High Court issued a stringent directive ordering the state government to settle the long‑standing arrears of dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) owed to its employees and pensioners.

The total outstanding liability has been quantified at more than ₹32,418 crore, reflecting the cumulative shortfall in inflation‑linked wage benefits.

The court stipulated that the payment must include a 6% interest rate, a measure intended to compensate beneficiaries for the delay and to accelerate the settlement process.

This judgment places additional fiscal pressure on the Punjab administration, which has been navigating rising inflation and the associated cost of living adjustments for its workforce.

State officials are now tasked with formulating a payment schedule that complies with the court’s order and ensures timely disbursement to the affected staff and retirees.
