Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s first hydrogen‑powered train in Haryana this Friday, a landmark step toward cleaner rail transport.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flag off India’s first hydrogen‑powered train in Haryana on Friday, a move that signals the country’s commitment to greener rail technology.
The ceremony will take place at the newly constructed hydrogen rail hub in Haryana, where the train will run on a 30‑kilometre stretch between the state’s major cities. The hydrogen fuel cell system powers the locomotive, emitting only water vapor and reducing carbon emissions dramatically.
The project, backed by the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, aims to showcase the viability of hydrogen as a clean energy source for public transport. It follows a series of pilot trials across the country that have demonstrated the technology’s safety and efficiency.
Industry experts say the launch could pave the way for a nationwide network of hydrogen trains, potentially transforming India’s freight and passenger rail services. The government plans to scale up the initiative in the coming years, with additional hydrogen stations and train sets under development.
