The National Highways Authority of India announced plans to upgrade its 1033 emergency helpline, adding real‑time vehicle location, artificial‑intelligence routing and quicker ambulance dispatch.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said it will revamp the 1033 toll‑free emergency number used by motorists on national highways. The upgrade will embed GPS‑based real‑time location tracking so that callers’ exact positions can be pinpointed instantly.

An artificial‑intelligence engine will analyse the location data and automatically route the request to the nearest response unit, whether it is a tow‑truck, police patrol or medical ambulance. The system is also designed to prioritize accidents involving severe injuries, triggering faster ambulance deployment.

NHAI plans to pilot the new platform on selected high‑traffic corridors before a nationwide rollout by the end of next year. Officials expect the enhancements to cut average response times by up to 30 percent and improve overall road‑safety outcomes.

The move aligns with the government’s broader push to digitise public services and leverage technology for safer, more efficient highway travel across the country.
