Botanists have identified a previously unknown flowering plant species in the forested regions of Assam and Meghalaya, marking a significant addition to India’s biodiversity.

A team of botanists conducting field surveys in the northeastern hills reported the discovery of a new flowering plant species in the dense forests of Assam and Meghalaya. The specimen, which does not match any known taxa in existing botanical records, was collected from a remote, undisturbed stretch of mixed deciduous and evergreen forest.

Preliminary analysis suggests the plant exhibits unique morphological traits, such as distinct petal coloration and leaf arrangement, that set it apart from related species in the region. Researchers say the find underscores the rich, yet still under‑explored, plant diversity of India’s northeast and could provide fresh insights into evolutionary patterns among flowering plants.

The scientists plan to undertake detailed taxonomic studies, including DNA sequencing, to formally describe the species and assess its conservation status. Conservationists have welcomed the discovery, noting that documenting new flora is essential for protecting fragile ecosystems that face pressures from deforestation and climate change.
