The Chief Minister of Meghalaya called for a statewide, multi‑sectoral strategy to curb anaemia, emphasizing the need to protect women and children.

Shillong, Meghalaya – In a press briefing, the state's chief minister highlighted the rising prevalence of anaemia among women of reproductive age and young children. She urged the health department, education sector and local NGOs to coordinate a comprehensive action plan that includes nutrition supplementation, awareness campaigns and regular screening in schools and primary health centres.

The minister noted that existing schemes such as the Anaemia Mukt Bharat initiative need stronger implementation at the grassroots level. She called for increased distribution of iron‑folic acid tablets, fortified foods and promotion of dietary diversity, especially in remote districts where malnutrition remains high.

She also announced that the state government will allocate additional funds for training community health workers to identify and manage anaemia cases early. The proposal will be presented to the state cabinet next week for approval, aiming to reduce anaemia rates in line with national health targets.

Stakeholders were invited to submit suggestions within the next month, signaling a collaborative approach to address the public health challenge.
