Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh called for the swift commencement of the Shangshak‑Tengnoupal highway project and urged the central government to approve funding for an elevated road in Imphal.
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has publicly pressed for the rapid initiation of the Shangshak‑Tengnoupal highway project, a key infrastructure plan aimed at improving connectivity in the state’s northern districts. The demand was voiced during a press briefing in Imphal, where the CM highlighted the strategic importance of the road for trade and tourism.
The proposed highway, spanning roughly 70 kilometres, is expected to link remote border areas with the state capital, reducing travel time and facilitating the movement of goods. State officials have long argued that the project will spur economic development and enhance security in a region that has faced logistical challenges.
In addition to the highway, Singh urged the central government to sanction the construction of an elevated road in Imphal. The city’s existing arterial routes are congested, and an elevated corridor is seen as essential to decongest traffic and improve urban mobility.
The chief minister appealed to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to expedite approvals and allocate the necessary funds, emphasizing that delays could hamper the state's growth agenda. He indicated that the state is prepared to fast‑track land acquisition and other preparatory work once clearances are received.
Stakeholders, including local business groups and transport unions, have welcomed the CM’s call, noting that timely execution of both projects could transform Manipur’s transport landscape and attract further investment.
