The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued a notice seeking clarification on the Dacoity Act after around 1,000 individuals were booked in connection with the sudden disappearance of a group of dacoits.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court, seated in Jabalpur, has formally issued a notice to the state government asking for a detailed response on the implementation of the Dacoity Act. The court’s intervention comes after a wave of bookings that saw roughly a thousand people charged in cases linked to a recent dacoit incident.

According to police records, a gang of dacoits vanished from the region, prompting law‑enforcement agencies to launch extensive investigations. In the process, about 1,000 suspects were apprehended and booked under various provisions, including the Dacoity Act, which deals with organized armed robbery.

The high court’s notice underscores concerns that the existing legal framework may be inadequate to address the scale of the arrests and the disappearance of the perpetrators. Judges have asked the state’s Home Department to submit a report outlining the circumstances of the dacoits’ disappearance and the rationale for invoking the Dacoity Act against such a large number of accused.

Legal experts note that the Dacoity Act, originally enacted to curb armed banditry, carries stringent penalties, and its application to a mass of bookings could have far‑reaching implications for due‑process rights. The court has set a deadline for the government’s reply, after which it may issue further directives.

The case highlights ongoing challenges in Madhya Pradesh’s fight against organized crime, especially in remote districts where dacoity has historically been a concern. Authorities are expected to review the findings and possibly recommend amendments to the law or its enforcement procedures.
