New Delhi – The Union government announced that work on early warning systems for 188 glacial lakes in the Himalayan region is being fast‑tracked. The move aims to provide real‑time monitoring and timely alerts to communities downstream, thereby mitigating the threat of glacial lake outburst floods.
Officials said the accelerated schedule will involve installing sensors, telemetry equipment and communication links at the identified lakes. The systems are expected to transmit water‑level data to disaster‑management centres, enabling rapid response in case of sudden rises.
The initiative reflects growing concerns over climate‑induced glacial melt, which has heightened the vulnerability of Himalayan valleys. By enhancing early detection capabilities, the government hopes to safeguard lives, property and critical infrastructure in the affected states.
