Researchers have identified a previously unknown scorpion species during a survey in Similipal National Park, Odisha.

A team of wildlife biologists conducting a routine biodiversity survey in Similipal National Park reported the discovery of a scorpion that does not match any known species in the region. The specimen was collected from the forest floor of the park's dense tropical moist deciduous zone and is being examined for unique morphological traits.

Preliminary analysis suggests the scorpion possesses distinct pedipalp structure and coloration that set it apart from other Indian scorpions. Taxonomists will compare the find with existing collections to confirm its status as a new species.

The discovery adds to Similipal's reputation as a hotspot for endemic fauna and underscores the importance of continued scientific exploration in protected areas. Researchers plan to publish a detailed description in a peer‑reviewed journal later this year.
