The government told the United Nations that any map endorsed by the body must correctly portray India's internationally recognised territory, rejecting versions that omit disputed regions.

The Indian government has reiterated that any map backed by the United Nations must accurately depict the country's internationally recognised borders. The statement, issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, emphasizes that a map should not be a generic illustration but must incorporate all territories that India claims under international law.

The demand follows reports of a draft UN map that allegedly omitted areas such as parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh, which are integral to India's territorial claim. Officials said such omissions could mislead global audiences about the legal status of these regions.

The ministry stressed that an accurate representation is essential for diplomatic engagements and for upholding India's sovereignty. While the United Nations has not yet issued a formal response, the government expects the map to be revised before any official endorsement.

Accurate cartography, the statement added, plays a vital role in international negotiations and in preventing misunderstandings about the extent of India's territory.
