India and 163 other UN member states voted at the General Assembly to adopt a new world map that enlarges Africa and reduces the size of North America, drawing sharp criticism from the United States.

At the United Nations General Assembly, India spearheaded a motion supported by 163 other member states to approve a revised world map. The proposed cartographic change expands the continental outline of Africa while proportionally shrinking the representation of North America.

The United States, a permanent Security Council member, publicly condemned the decision, arguing that such symbolic alterations undermine the credibility of the UN and distract from substantive global issues.

The vote reflects a growing push by several developing nations to reshape global symbols that they perceive as Euro‑centric. While the map carries no legal authority, its adoption signals a diplomatic statement about representation and equity in international forums.
