On Monday, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, which came into force today. The act establishes a new governance framework for the Bengaluru metropolitan area, aiming to address rapid urban growth.
The legislation creates a Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) and a Metropolitan Planning Authority (MPA) to oversee infrastructure, land use, and public services. It also consolidates several municipal corporations and local bodies under a unified administration.
Officials say the act will improve coordination among agencies, streamline decision‑making, and enhance delivery of utilities such as water, sanitation, and transportation. The government plans to roll out the new structure over the next 12 months.
