The Madhya Pradesh excise department seized 195 litres of illicit hand‑distilled liquor and 11,350 kg of mahua lahan from the forests of Omkarshewar, registering 18 cases under the Excise Act.
The excise wing of Madhya Pradesh’s administration intensified its crackdown on illegal liquor production following the high‑profile Sagar toxic‑spirit case. In a coordinated raid in the dense forest area of Omkarshewar, officials seized 195 litres of hand‑distilled, unlicensed liquor along with 11,350 kilograms of mahua lahan, a raw material often used for illicit brewing.
The operation, conducted under the authority of the Excise Act, resulted in the filing of 18 separate cases against those involved in the manufacturing and storage of the contraband alcohol. The seized mahua lahan is expected to be destroyed to prevent further illegal distillation.
Authorities said the seizure underscores a renewed focus on curbing the supply chain of spurious liquor that has plagued several districts in the state. The department plans to continue regular inspections in forested zones where clandestine distilleries are known to operate.
