A sales stall inside Amritsar’s court complex now showcases and sells items crafted by inmates, aiming to provide them a market for their skills.
Amritsar’s District Court complex has opened a dedicated sales stall where products made by prison inmates are displayed and sold to the public. The initiative, launched by the Punjab prison department in collaboration with local authorities, seeks to create a sustainable market for the crafts and skills developed by detainees during their incarceration.
The stall features a range of handmade items, including embroidered textiles, wooden carvings, and simple metalwork, all produced within the prison workshops. Prison officials say the venture not only generates modest earnings for the inmates but also helps them acquire vocational experience that can aid reintegration after release.
Visitors to the court complex have responded positively, purchasing several pieces and expressing support for the rehabilitation effort. Authorities plan to monitor sales and, if successful, expand the model to other court premises across the state, thereby extending livelihood opportunities for more inmates.
