The Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan plans to augment its tiger population with a female from Maharashtra next month, while a proposal to bring 200 chital from Delhi has been submitted for approval.
The Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve, located in the Kota district of Rajasthan, is set to receive a female tiger from the neighboring state of Maharashtra next month. The translocation aims to bolster the resident tiger population and improve genetic diversity within the reserve.
To support the growing predator base, the Rajasthan Forest Department has drafted a plan to introduce 200 chital (spotted deer) sourced from Delhi. The proposal, which details logistics and habitat preparation, has been forwarded to the state wildlife authority for clearance.
Officials say that enhancing both the tiger numbers and their prey base is essential for the long‑term health of the ecosystem. If approved, the chital will be gradually released to ensure a sustainable food supply for the tigers, reinforcing the reserve's conservation objectives.
