DRDO selects Junput in West Bengal for new missile testing range

New Delhi – The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has revealed its intention to set up a dedicated missile testing range in the state of West Bengal. After a site‑selection process, the coastal village of Junput has been earmarked as the location for the facility.

The proposed range is expected to augment India's existing testing infrastructure, providing a strategic foothold on the eastern seaboard. Officials indicated that the site offers suitable terrain and proximity to the Bay of Bengal, which are advantageous for missile flight trials.

While detailed timelines and budget allocations have not been disclosed, the DRDO has affirmed that the project will proceed in accordance with national defence priorities. Local authorities have been asked to coordinate with the agency to facilitate land acquisition and related clearances.

The move underscores the government's focus on expanding indigenous defence capabilities and diversifying testing locations across the country.
