Body mix-up at Jaipur's private Anch Hospital leaves family with wrong corpse

Earlier this week, staff at Anch Hospital, a private facility in Durgapura, Jaipur, mistakenly handed over the body of one deceased patient to the relatives of another. Both families had arrived to collect the remains of their loved ones, but due to a lapse in verification, the coffins were swapped.
The mistake was discovered when the family that had taken the wrong body noticed discrepancies in the identification documents attached to the coffin. They immediately reported the error to hospital officials, who then called the other family back to the premises.
Police were summoned to the hospital to oversee the correction and to record statements from the affected parties. Hospital management apologized for the oversight and said an internal inquiry would be launched to identify procedural gaps.
Authorities emphasized that such mishandling of human remains is a serious breach of trust and may attract legal action under existing health and criminal statutes. The incident has raised concerns about the adequacy of verification protocols in private medical establishments.
The families are now awaiting the completion of the investigation, while the hospital has pledged to review and tighten its body‑handling procedures to prevent future occurrences.
