The three‑day strike by Bhopal’s sanitation staff has ended, leaving the municipal corporation with over 2,500 tonnes of waste to clear using more than 400 trucks.

The three‑day strike by sanitation workers in Bhopal concluded on Monday, allowing municipal services to resume after a prolonged shutdown. The stoppage resulted in a significant buildup of solid waste across the city, which officials now describe as a major operational challenge.

According to the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, the accumulated waste exceeds 2,500 tonnes. The city typically generates around 850 tonnes of garbage each day, a volume that is normally handled by a fleet of more than 400 collection trucks. With the strike over, these vehicles are being deployed to clear the backlog as quickly as possible.

Municipal officials warned that the sheer volume will test the corporation’s resources and may cause temporary disruptions in waste collection in some neighborhoods. They have not provided a definitive timeline for complete clearance, but emphasized that the priority is to restore regular sanitation services and prevent health hazards.

The incident underscores the dependence of urban infrastructure on a stable workforce and highlights the need for contingency planning in waste management operations.
