The banana fibre processing unit in Ri‑Bhoi district of Meghalaya is close to becoming operational under the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North‑East (PM‑DevINE) scheme.
Meghalaya's Ri‑Bhoi district is witnessing the near‑completion of a banana fibre processing facility that has been funded under the Prime Minister's Development Initiative for North‑East (PM‑DevINE) scheme. The plant, designed to convert banana waste into value‑added fibre, aims to create a new agro‑industrial hub in the region and generate employment for local communities.
The project, approved in 2022, is being executed by the state government in partnership with central agencies. Construction work has progressed rapidly, with the main production line and storage units expected to be commissioned within the next few weeks.
Officials say the facility will process thousands of tonnes of banana stems annually, producing fibre for use in textiles, paper and composite materials. By tapping an abundant agricultural residue, the plant seeks to boost farmer incomes, reduce waste, and promote sustainable manufacturing in the Northeast.
The inauguration is slated for early 2025, pending final safety and quality inspections. Stakeholders anticipate that the venture will spur ancillary businesses, such as packaging and logistics, further strengthening the regional economy.
