Heavy rainfall forced officials to open all fourteen gates of the Gangrel Dam, causing a surge in the Mahanadi River in Chhattisgarh.

The state water authority in Chhattisgarh ordered the full opening of the Gangrel Dam’s fourteen spillway gates after intense monsoon rains intensified the flow of the Mahanadi River. Officials said the decision was taken to manage the sudden rise in water levels and to prevent overtopping of the dam structure.

Meteorological services had earlier warned of prolonged heavy showers across the region, which fed into the river’s catchment area. The surge prompted immediate action to release excess water in a controlled manner, safeguarding downstream communities.

Local residents were advised to stay alert and avoid low‑lying areas along the riverbanks as the water level continued to rise. Emergency response teams remain on standby to assist any affected villages.

The opening of all gates is a standard flood‑mitigation measure under such conditions, aimed at balancing reservoir safety with downstream flood risk.

Authorities will continue to monitor rainfall and river flow, updating the public as the situation evolves.
