The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) will install AI‑enabled surveillance cameras on its fleet to automatically detect and alert for speeding, mobile phone usage, smoking and driver drowsiness.
Ahmedabad's municipal bus operator, AMTS, announced a rollout of artificial‑intelligence based cameras across its city‑wide fleet. The devices are programmed to recognise specific unsafe behaviours such as exceeding speed limits, using a mobile phone while driving, smoking inside the vehicle and signs of driver fatigue.
The system works in real time: when a violation is detected, an instant alert is sent to a central monitoring hub, allowing supervisors to intervene promptly. Officials said the technology will complement existing manual checks and help create a data‑driven safety framework for public transport.
By automating detection, AMTS aims to reduce accident rates and improve passenger confidence. The initiative also aligns with the city's broader smart‑city objectives, leveraging digital tools to enhance urban mobility and road safety.
