A 30‑metre long zamindari dam near Jhamtiya in Begusarai district collapsed early Monday as the Ganga’s water level rose, sending fast‑moving water into the Rani‑1, Rani‑2 and Rani‑3 panchayats.
The zamindari dam spanning roughly 30 metres near the village of Jhamtiya in the Bakhwara block of Begusarai district gave way early on Monday. The breach occurred as the Ganga River’s water level continued to rise, exerting pressure on the ageing structure.
When the dam failed, a powerful surge of water rushed downstream, inundating the adjacent Rani‑1, Rani‑2 and Rani‑3 panchayats. Residents reported that water entered homes and low‑lying fields within minutes, creating hazardous currents and raising concerns of further damage.
A team from the Water Resources Department arrived at the site shortly after the incident to assess the breach and coordinate emergency measures. Officials are monitoring water levels and have begun evacuating affected families while arranging temporary shelters.
