The West Bengal government plans to combine the Madrasah Service Commission with the West Bengal School Service Commission, with a legislative bill expected to be introduced after the Durga Puja festivities.
Kolkata, Oct 8 — The state cabinet of West Bengal has approved a proposal to dissolve the Madrasah Service Commission (MSC) and merge its functions with the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC). The move aims to streamline recruitment and administrative processes for both mainstream schools and madrasas under a single authority.
According to the cabinet note, the merger will eliminate overlapping responsibilities and create a unified recruitment framework for teachers, clerical staff and other educational posts. The proposal also calls for the transfer of MSC staff and assets to WBSSC, ensuring continuity of ongoing recruitment drives.
A draft bill reflecting the merger is expected to be tabled in the Legislative Assembly shortly after the Durga Puja holidays, when the assembly reconvenes. Lawmakers will then debate the details before the amendment is formally enacted.
The decision has been welcomed by the education department, which says the consolidation will improve transparency and reduce administrative costs. Critics, however, have cautioned that the unique needs of madrasas must be safeguarded within the larger WBSSC structure.
If passed, the unified commission will oversee all state‑run school and madrasah appointments, marking a significant restructuring of West Bengal's education recruitment machinery.
