Recent outbreaks of violence in Meghalaya have led to a noticeable drop in tourist inflow, prompting the state government to set up a dedicated helpline for visitors.

A spate of violent incidents in Meghalaya over the past week has unsettled both domestic and foreign travelers, according to local tourism officials. The unrest, which involved clashes in several towns, has raised safety concerns among prospective visitors and led many tour operators to postpone or cancel bookings.

Hotel owners and local businesses in popular destinations such as Shillong, Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong report a sharp decline in occupancy rates and footfall. Travel agencies have noted a reduction in inquiries, and some have redirected clients to alternative hill stations until the situation stabilises.

In response, the Meghalaya state government announced the launch of a 24‑hour helpline aimed at providing real‑time assistance to tourists facing any difficulty. The helpline, reachable at a toll‑free number, will coordinate with police, health services and local authorities to ensure swift resolution of complaints.

State tourism minister emphasized that the helpline is part of a broader effort to restore confidence, adding that security forces have been deployed to maintain order in affected areas. Visitors are urged to stay informed through official channels and to report any incidents promptly.
