Villagers in a Cooch Behar village converged on a police outpost after a local politician was taken into custody in connection with a 2023 murder case. The crowd surrounded the outpost, broke through barriers and entered the premises, insisting that the detained leader be released.
The politician’s arrest earlier this week had sparked anger among his supporters, who claim the detention is politically motivated. Residents staged a spontaneous protest, chanting slogans and demanding a transparent inquiry into the murder case.
Police officials reported that they attempted to disperse the crowd using loudspeakers and non‑lethal measures. No official casualty figures have been released, but the situation remained tense as law‑enforcement officers worked to restore order and secure the detained individual.
Local authorities have announced that an investigation into the raid will be opened, and senior police officers have been dispatched to the area to prevent further escalation.
