Uttarakhand's chief minister introduced an artificial‑intelligence driven voice portal aimed at preserving the region's three indigenous languages—Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari.
The Uttarakhand government announced the rollout of a new AI‑powered voice portal designed to digitise and promote the state’s native tongues—Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari. The portal will allow users to interact in these languages, generate speech‑to‑text conversions, and access educational content, thereby creating a digital repository for future generations.
During the launch ceremony, the chief minister highlighted the risk of language erosion in the Himalayan region and stressed that technology can play a pivotal role in cultural preservation. The portal is being developed in collaboration with language experts and technology partners, and will be accessible via smartphones and web browsers.
The initiative aligns with broader state efforts to integrate digital tools into education and tourism, aiming to make regional languages more visible in official communications and public services. Officials expect the platform to be continuously updated with new vocabulary and dialect variations based on community feedback.
The project is part of Uttarakhand's larger cultural heritage strategy, which includes documentation of folk songs, oral histories, and traditional knowledge. By leveraging AI, the government hopes to ensure that these languages remain vibrant and usable in everyday life.
Stakeholders, including local NGOs and academic institutions, have welcomed the move, noting that a scalable digital solution could serve as a model for other Indian states facing similar linguistic challenges.
