A student from Andhra Pradesh has secured a place among the top 20 entries in the 2026 James Dyson Award for his innovative Braille printer.

A young engineering student from Andhra Pradesh has been shortlisted among the top 20 projects in the prestigious James Dyson Award 2026. The entry, a low‑cost Braille printer, is designed to enable visually impaired users to produce Braille documents independently. The Dyson Award, an international competition that encourages student‑led solutions to real‑world challenges, received hundreds of submissions this year, and the Andhra student’s prototype stood out for its accessibility and potential social impact. Organisers noted that the device combines open‑source hardware with simple mechanical components, making it affordable for schools and NGOs. The finalist will now compete for a cash prize and mentorship that could help scale the printer for wider distribution across India.

The James Dyson Award, administered by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, seeks to recognise innovative engineering designs that address unmet needs. This year’s shortlist includes projects ranging from renewable energy solutions to medical devices, reflecting the competition’s broad scope. The Andhra student’s Braille printer joins a diverse cohort, highlighting the growing focus on inclusive technology in India’s academic community.

If successful, the printer could reduce reliance on expensive commercial Braille embossers, offering a cost‑effective alternative for educational institutions serving visually impaired students. Stakeholders from disability advocacy groups have welcomed the development, urging further support to bring the technology to the grassroots level.
