The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a hike in the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns, setting it at Rs 25,000 per month.
The health ministry of Uttar Pradesh issued an official order raising the monthly stipend for medical (MBBS) and dental (BDS) interns to Rs 25,000. The move is part of the state’s effort to improve the financial support provided to trainees during their compulsory internship period.
Previously, interns received a lower allowance, which many professional bodies had criticised as insufficient given the long hours and responsibilities involved. By increasing the stipend, the government aims to align the remuneration with the cost of living and to encourage more graduates to complete their internships in state‑run hospitals.
The revised amount will be disbursed through the existing payment system used for all government‑appointed interns. No additional benefits or changes to the internship curriculum were announced alongside the stipend hike.
State health officials said the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening medical education infrastructure and retaining talent within Uttar Pradesh’s public health system.
