Union Minister Jitendra Singh unveiled plans to install a Doppler weather radar in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir to improve meteorological monitoring.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who heads the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Department of Atomic Energy, announced that a state‑of‑the‑art Doppler weather radar will be installed in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir. The project is intended to strengthen real‑time weather observation and early warning capabilities across the district’s rugged terrain.
The radar will be capable of detecting precipitation, wind patterns and severe weather events up to several hundred kilometres. Data from the system will be fed directly to the India Meteorological Department’s forecasting network, enabling authorities to issue timely alerts for floods, landslides and storms.
The move follows recent efforts to bolster meteorological infrastructure in the northern states, where climate‑related disasters have become more frequent. Local officials in Doda welcomed the initiative, citing expected benefits for agriculture, disaster management and tourism.
Funding for the installation comes from the central government's weather‑radar scheme, and the equipment is slated for operational readiness within the next year.
