The Tripura traffic department has announced stricter guidelines for Puja Passes after unpaid traffic fines crossed Rs 160 crore.
The Tripura traffic police issued a circular on Monday tightening the eligibility criteria for the annual Puja Pass, a permit that allows vehicles to move freely during the Durga Puja holidays. Under the new rules, drivers must clear any outstanding traffic challans before applying for the pass, and verification will be carried out through an online portal.
State officials disclosed that unpaid traffic fines have accumulated to more than Rs 160 crore in the past fiscal year, prompting the crackdown. The department said the massive arrears undermine road safety and revenue collection, and the revised policy aims to compel compliance.
Enforcement teams will conduct spot checks at entry points to major cities and during peak festival traffic. Vehicles found with a Puja Pass but with pending dues will have the permit revoked on the spot and may face additional penalties. Authorities expect the move to reduce violations and improve cash flow for road maintenance.
