The state government has launched tourism schemes worth Rs 487 crore, but forest clearances and limited funds are slowing progress, minister Sushanta Chowdhury said.

Tripura's tourism department has embarked on a series of projects valued at Rs 487 crore, aiming to boost visitor numbers and generate employment in the northeastern state. The initiatives include infrastructure upgrades, heritage site promotion and eco‑tourism facilities across key districts.

Minister Sushanta Chowdhury told reporters that while the projects are already underway, obtaining clearances from the forest department remains a major bottleneck. Several sites earmarked for development lie within or adjacent to protected forest areas, requiring detailed environmental assessments.

In addition to regulatory delays, the ministry faces a shortfall in allocated funds, which could postpone the scheduled completion dates. Officials are seeking additional budgetary support from the central government and exploring public‑private partnerships to bridge the gap.

Despite these challenges, the state hopes the tourism push will diversify its economy, traditionally reliant on agriculture and small‑scale industry, and position Tripura as a preferred destination for domestic and international travelers.
