Tripura launches pilot ‘smart border’ project with Bangladesh

The state government of Tripura has initiated a pilot scheme to install a ‘smart border’ system along its frontier with Bangladesh, aiming to modernise cross‑border movement and security.
Tripura’s administration announced the commencement of a pilot project to deploy a ‘smart border’ infrastructure along its 856‑kilometre frontier with Bangladesh. The initiative, funded by the state and supported by central agencies, will install electronic surveillance, automated customs clearance and biometric verification points at selected crossing locations.
The pilot will initially cover three major border outposts, where sensors, cameras and data‑exchange systems will be tested for real‑time monitoring of goods and travelers. Officials said the technology is expected to curb smuggling, reduce illegal crossings and speed up legitimate trade.
The state’s chief minister emphasized that the project aligns with the broader India‑Bangladesh cooperation framework and could be expanded across the entire border if the trial proves successful. Implementation is slated to begin within the next two weeks, with regular performance reviews planned.
Stakeholders, including local traders and security agencies, have been briefed on the operational protocols. The pilot’s outcomes will inform future investments in border digitisation across the northeastern region.
