The state government of Tripura has announced plans to establish a dedicated Health University, positioning itself as a frontrunner in medical education across Northeast India.

The Tripura government has unveiled a proposal to set up a dedicated Health University aimed at transforming the state into a hub for medical education in the Northeast. The initiative, announced by the Chief Minister’s office, seeks to attract students from across the region and provide advanced training in health sciences.
The university is slated to offer undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes in medicine, nursing, public health and allied health disciplines. It will be located in a strategically chosen campus in the capital, with plans for state‑of‑the‑art laboratories and clinical training facilities.
Partnerships with established medical institutions and the Indian Council of Medical Research are expected to enhance curriculum quality and research output. The government also intends to provide scholarships and incentives for students from underrepresented communities.
By establishing this institution, Tripura aims to reduce the brain drain of medical professionals and position itself as a key player in the region’s healthcare development.
