Delhi authorities detained three contractors for allegedly ignoring workers’ warnings before the Chawri Bazar structure collapsed, killing several laborers.
A multi‑storey building in Delhi’s historic Chawri Bazar area collapsed early on Monday, trapping dozens of construction workers inside. Rescue teams recovered several bodies and many injured workers were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Preliminary investigations by the Delhi Police revealed that contractors overseeing the project had been warned by laborers about structural cracks and unsafe scaffolding, but the concerns were reportedly dismissed. The oversight is now being treated as a case of negligence leading to loss of life.
Three contractors associated with the construction firm have been taken into custody. Police officials said they will be charged under sections of the Indian Penal Code that pertain to culpable homicide and criminal negligence. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities examine site records and interview witnesses.
The incident has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of building safety norms in the capital, with industry bodies urging immediate audits of ongoing projects.
