The Telangana government has created a new agency to oversee and improve safety on the state's roads and railways, aiming to reduce accidents and enhance coordination among transport departments.
Hyderabad, September 25 (The Siasat Daily) – The Telangana administration announced the formation of a dedicated body tasked with overseeing safety measures on both roadways and rail networks across the state. The agency, named the Telangana Road and Rail Safety Authority (TG‑TMARS), will operate under the supervision of the state transport and rail ministries.
The authority is expected to formulate safety standards, conduct regular audits of infrastructure, and coordinate emergency response mechanisms. Officials said the move responds to a rise in road and rail accidents over the past year and aims to bring a unified approach to prevention and mitigation.
The first meeting of TG‑TMARS is scheduled for early October, where a senior bureaucrat will outline its operational framework and budgetary allocations. The government has also indicated that the body will work closely with the National Highway Authority of India and Indian Railways to align state-level initiatives with national safety guidelines.
Stakeholders, including transport unions and road safety NGOs, welcomed the decision, urging swift implementation of stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns. The authority will also monitor compliance of private transport operators and freight carriers operating within Telangana.
